They came that third spring, early

while we were still in the frenzy of turning

thawed earth over, breaking up the winter-

thickened clumps with a quick jab

of pitchfork, side-smack of the shovel.

Two young men. They said they were headed west

to seek their fortune, but I could see how

they trembled like seeds

in the dark, warming with the touch

of sun-soaked soil. What they sought

was much deeper and closer.

We put them to work clearing trees:

cropping branches, felling the trunk,

digging deep for the root.

When they rested, their necks glistened with sweat.

I brought them water and sang.

New leaves unfurled in the wind.
